Project Literacy, the San Leandro Public Library's FREE adult literacy and ESL program, seeks new volunteer tutors
Over 20% of people in our community have low literacy levels: they struggle on the job, when seeking accurate information, when communicating with teachers and healthcare providers, and in many other situations.
You can help! After your training, you will be matched with an adult who wants to improve their reading/writing or their English language skills. Volunteer Qualifications Teaching experience is not necessary. We are looking for individuals who show empathy, respect, and patience for others in the learning process. We will provide you with training and support! We also need help with outreach, clerical tasks, and other support services. Tutors must: Live in Alameda County Be 18 years old or older and have a high school diploma or GED Speak, read, and write English well Complete a self-paced orientation and three in-person training workshops Tutor a minimum of 2 hours per week for a period of at least 6 months Prepare for weekly tutoring lessons and report required information to Project Literacy Pass fingerprinting/LiveScan New Tutor Orientation and TrainingProject Literacy tutor training consists of a self-paced online orientation that can be completed at any time, and three in-person workshops held several times a year. The next in-person training is tentatively scheduled for three 90-minute sessions to be held on Saturdays in May: the 4th, 11th, and 18th.Please reach out for more information - there is no obligation to sign up! Volunteer: Memory Lab Assistant
What is the Memory Lab? The DIY Memory Lab is a do-it-yourself space with equipment to digitize home movies, scan photographs and slides, along with other personal/family keepsakes, located in the History Room on second floor of the San Leandro Public Library. It's a DIY model, with step-by-step instructions provided for user reference, with staff or volunteers on hand for technical support. Since the Memory Lab will be located in the History Room, there will be minimal History Room related tasks with this position. Volunteers will receive training on the equipment before starting. Please note that the Memory Lab is not yet open and the start date listed for this position is subject to change.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Staffs the History Room while the Memory Lab is open. Provides one-on-one assistance to patrons using the Memory Lab. Troubleshoots Memory Lab equipment. Provides basic research assistance to patrons in the History Room.
Skills Needed: Excellent computer skills Excellent communication skills Competent on giving instruction on a one-on-one basis
Weekly Shifts Available: Mondays: 2:00-5:00 Fridays: 11:00-2:00 Fridays: 2:00-5:00If responding to this need, please include preferred shift in reply.
Time Commitment: Volunteers are required to commit to a minimum of 3 hours per week and a minimum of 6 months.
