Change a life - teach an adult!
Project Literacy, the San Leandro Public Library's FREE adult literacy and ESL program, seeks volunteer tutors
Over 20% of people in our community have low literacy levels: they struggle on the job, when seeking accurate information, when communicating with teachers and healthcare providers, and in many other situations.
You can help! After your training, you will be matched with an adult who is eager to improve their reading/writing or their English language skills.
Volunteer Qualifications
You don't need teaching experience -- just patience, empathy, and a willingness to learn. We will provide you with training and support!
Tutors must:
- Be 18 years old or older and have a high school diploma or GED
- Speak, read, and write English well
- Complete a self-paced orientation and three in-person training workshops
- Tutor a minimum of 2 hours per week for a period of at least 6 months
- Prepare for weekly tutoring lessons
- Submit a monthly report to the program coordinator
- Pass a fingerprinting background check
New Tutor Orientation and Training
Project Literacy tutor holds tutor training opportunities at least three times a year. Training consists of two parts:
- Complete a self-paced online orientation and brief questionnaire at any time
- Attend three in-person workshops at the main San Leandro Public Library (totaling six hours of training)
Summer 2026 training workshops will take place over three Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 PM:
Wednesday, June 17
Wednesday, June 24
Wednesday, July 1
Please view the self-paced online orientation for complete details - there is no obligation to sign up!
