Help an adult learn to read - change a life!
Project Literacy, the San Leandro Public Library's FREE adult literacy and ESL program, seeks new volunteer tutors
Over 20% of people in our community have low literacy levels: they struggle on the job, when seeking accurate information, when communicating with teachers and healthcare providers, and in many other situations.
You can help! After your training, you will be matched with an adult who wants to improve their reading/writing or their English language skills.
Volunteer Qualifications
Teaching experience is not necessary. We are looking for individuals who show empathy, respect, and patience for others in the learning process. We will provide you with training and support! We also need help with outreach, clerical tasks, and other support services.
Tutors must:
- Live in Alameda County
- Be 18 years old or older and have a high school diploma or GED
- Speak, read, and write English well
- Complete a self-paced orientation and three in-person training workshops
- Tutor a minimum of 2 hours per week for a period of at least 6 months
- Prepare for weekly tutoring lessons and report required information to Project Literacy
- Pass fingerprinting/LiveScan
New Tutor Orientation and Training
Project Literacy tutor training consists of a self-paced online orientation that can be completed at any time, and three in-person workshops held several times a year.
The next in-person training is tentatively scheduled for three 90-minute sessions to be held on Saturdays in May: the 4th, 11th, and 18th.
Please reach out for more information - there is no obligation to sign up! To receive the online orientation, or to be added to the mailing list to find out about future trainings, please email projectliteracy@sanleandro.org or call 510-577-3944. Trainings are held at the main San Leandro Public Library.
